Gardaí in County Roscommon have launched an investigation following the discovery of the body of a cyclist in the early hours of this Sunday morning.

The alarm was raised at around 2am after the body of the man, aged in his 50s, was found at Cloonchambers, close to the town of Castlerea.

Gardai say the cyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene and that his body was subsequently conveyed to Roscommon University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The results of the post-mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation.

"The road is currently closed for technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place," said a garda spokesperson who appealed for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were travelling in the Castlerea area between 12 midnight and 2am are asked to make this footage available to gardaí," they said.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlerea garda station on 094 9621 630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
