E-scooters will be prohibited from public transport as of today, October 7 2024 for safety reasons and to prevent the risk of on-board combustion.
The safety measures were prompted as a result of lithium-ion batteries being commonplace in the manufacturing of e-scooters.
The batteries are known to overheat and combust and have resulted recent fires and thick black smoke on public transport in Barcelona and Madrid.
E-bikes and mobility scooters are not affected by today's new ban and the e-scooter restriction is subject to periodic review by the National Transport Authority and the transport operators going forward.
The ban also applies to e-scooters on Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Go-Ahead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann, Luas and TFI Local Link.
