'Not to click the link' - Staying informed on scam text messages

A text scam is currently making the rounds to mobile phone users across Ireland claiming to be from gov.ie and stating that receivers of the text are eligible for a "discounted electricity bill" under the emergency benefit scheme followed by a link.

The same text scam made the rounds in October of this year following the Budget announcement.

A warning regarding these scams on the gov.ie website states: "Scams and attempted fraud are very common. They can happen at any time. Government departments and agencies or your bank will never phone, text, email or video call you unexpectedly asking for your bank details.

"Never give your bank details, passwords or personal details if it seems a bit odd or out of the blue."
