Schedule shake up sees parents receive €420 payment early in the coming weeks

Parents who are eligible to receive the New Baby Grant due in February may be paid early due to a schedule shake up.

The new grant which was announced in Budget 20225 will be paid out each month to eligible parents and has already been rolled out for January.

The grant will paid on the first Tuesday of each month just like the Child Benefit payment.

Additionally, the shake up in payment scheduling could see parents receive their February Child Benefit payments early.

As St Brigid's Day bank holiday approaches, it is important to note that banks and post offices are closed on Monday, February 3. This means any social welfare payments that are due to be paid on the Monday as well as Child Benefit on Tuesday will be available before the bank holiday on Friday, January 31 or Saturday, February 1.

Changes in the schedule are also likely to apply to the New Baby Grant due to be paid on February 4.

The new grant of €280 will be paid along with the child's first Child Benefit payment of €140 which means that parents of a new baby can expect to receive €420 in total from both payments.

The grant applies to children who were born or adopted after December 1, 2024.

New parents who do not have other children will be sent a form to register for Child Benefit after they register their child's birth. Parents with existing children who have a new baby will automatically have their new child added to their existing Child Benefit claim and will receive a notification when their Child Benefit payment is due for their new baby.

The below dates are those of Child Benefit payments for the remainder of the year and the months they're likely to be paid earlier than scheduled:

  • March 4
  • April 1
  • May 6 (May 5 is a bank holiday)
  • June 3 (June 2 is a bank holiday)
  • July 1
  • August 5 (August 4 is a bank holiday)
  • September 2
  • October 7
