An off-duty firefighter has become a local hero after he rescued a person from the River Liffey while out shopping for an engagement ring.
In a post on Facebook, Dublin Fire Brigade posted a picture of the firefighter Tom O'Reilly and a post hailing him for his quick thinking,
"Off duty Firefighter/Paramedic Tom O'Reilly, who was in town to collect a wedding ring with his fiancé Lauren, sprang into action last night when he saw a person in the River Liffey.
"Tom threw a life "ring" (soz) and brought the person into the quayside. From rings to rescue."
Hundreds of people were quick to comment under the post congratulating and thanking Tom for his service, one comment said,
"Well done Tom that woman knows she's on a winner with a lad like you best of luck with your future wife and wedding plans."
While another said,
"well done Tom. Congratulations on your engagement. That's one to tell the grandchildren. Thank you for your valuable service. May you and your soon to be wife enjoy many happy years together."
