The pumps.ie website said the current average prices across Ireland are 149.9 cent for Petrol and 139.9 cent for Diesel.

The price of petrol in Ireland has climbed to its highest level in almost three years - and has shot up by over 10 cent since January alone.

Petrol is now at its most expensive since August 2015, while diesel is costing more than at any time since July of the same year.

The AA said a motorist who drives 12,000 miles per year at a fuel consumption rate of 30 miles per gallon will use 150 litres of fuel per month.

At current prices that amounts to €211.50 per month for petrol, of which €130.71 is tax.

Meanwhile, a motorist driving a diesel-powered vehicle will spend €196.50 per month on fuel, a figure that includes €111.61 in tax.

The AA is calling on the Government to cut the taxes and excise duties it charges for motor fuel to reduce the cost to motorists.
