THE TEEN CLUB ...Liam O'Keeffe writes:
In the summer of 1966 a group of adults got together in the old Patrician secondary school on the Station Road, Newbridge (Parish Centre) with a view to setting up a youth club for the town. It’s aim was to break down any barriers which may have existed between the three secondary schools, Patrician boys, Holy Family girls and the Vocational. The age group was between 13and 18. I was 19 at the time and I suppose I was really a buffer between the adults and the TEENS.
The adult advisory board members were: Sean Feeney(Voc.Sch.) Fr. Denis Harrington c.c., SGT. Kevin Derrane(Garda), Michael Ryan (St.Joseph’s Eyre St.), Noel Lennon and Mrs. Ryan(Holy Family).
The Youth Committee consisted of: Marie O’Hanlon, Robert Mullally, Liam Kett , Kevin Cahill, Nicholas Leahy, Elizabeth Ryan, Catherine Reilly, and Betty Gaffney and Joe Teahan. The group met every Thursday night in the G.A.A. hall on the Barracks side of the football pitch. Inter school debates, Question Times, Instruction in First Aid courtesy Commandant Billy Reid Order of Malta, What’s My Line, Terry Moore (Sister of Christy’s) would make the group aware of The Itinerant Settlement issues. Dan Kennedy would inform us of The Care of the Elderly. Fun and games were the order of the day.
The TEEN name and logo was invented by Catherine Scullion. We had our own flag too, and this was on display whenever we had an occasion.
Nick. Lacey the local boot maker even made me a leather medal with the TEEN logo on it and an inscription underneath in Irish.
