A Co Kildare man has been slammed by a renowned District Judge for giving the motor trade a 'horrendous name.'

Evidence was given how a man, residing in Celbridge, born in India, and working as an IT Engineer, in Cork, purchased a car for €8,600 from a North Kildare man, in March 2016.  The court heard how the Co Kildare man advertised himself as being a car business, but admitted in court, on Thursday, that the business did not exist.

In court the accused said: "I put my hands up, the car company did not exist."

At Naas District Court, the case was heard under the Small Claims Court.

Evidence was heard how the car was purchased and soon afterwards, started to leak oil.

The injured party said that he was never told what was repaired and that car can't be driven and is parked in his front driveway, the court heard how he had to purchase another car in order to get transport to his work in Cork.

In court, evidence was heard how the accused sent a letter to the injured party, threatening to have both him and his family sent back to India.

The court heard how the accused told the injured party that he has 'friends' in the immigration office.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said: "You are seriously giving the motor trade a horrendous name, you are an embarrassment to yourself and the motor trade."

The Judge said that if the case was heard before the District Court, then the full amount of €8, 600 would be paid.

Judge Zaidan ordered that the accused pay €2,000 to the injured party.

He directed Gardaí in court to take statements in relation to the letter threatening the accused to have himself and his family sent out of the country.
