Road users have been urged to use extreme care on all roads with gales and very heavy rainfall.
The forecasted monsoon-style downpours hit Kildare at 12 noon.
Up to two inches of rainfall is predicted until at least 6pm.
Rainfall Radar maps by Met Eireann show Kildare and the eastern half of Ireland completely covered.
There is limited visibility for motorists who are urged to slow down and be mindful of shorter breaking distances on water-logged surfaces.
Spot flooding will be a major risk on motorways.
There may also be debris such as fallen branches and trees on secondary road
Keep dimmed headlights on all day.
