A dominant first-half blitz from reigning champions Athy RFC proved decisive as the Kildare side powered past Tullow to secure their seventh-ever Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup title in Edenderry on Sunday afternoon.
Winger Ciaran Fennessy was outstanding throughout and finished with a hat-trick as Athy surged into a commanding 27–0 half-time lead, laying the platform for a deserved victory and back-to-back Provincial Towns Cup successes.
The Kildare men made a blistering start and crossed for their opening try after just two and a half minutes. Craig Miller produced a perfectly weighted diagonal kick in behind the defence towards the corner flag, where Fennessy gathered at pace before touching down. Josh Miller added an excellent conversion from the touchline to give the champions an early 7–0 lead.
Maintaining a relentless tempo in the opening exchanges, Athy repeatedly forced turnovers and applied sustained pressure inside the Tullow half. Their dominance soon yielded further
reward when Josh Miller extended the advantage with a well-struck penalty approaching the quarter-hour mark.
Shortly afterwards, a high tackle on Aidan Henry handed Athy another opportunity to add to their tally. Miller stepped up from near halfway and confidently landed the long-range penalty to stretch the lead to 13–0 midway through the half.
In the 22 minute Shane Duffy produced a moment of quality that nearly brought Tullow back into the contest. Racing onto a clever kick ahead, he burst through the defensive line, but his attempted offload failed to find support at a crucial moment.
Ten minutes before the break Athy came within inches of a second try when loosehead prop Aaron Rowan powered towards the line following sustained pressure, only for a superb last-ditch tackle from Leonard to force him into touch just short of grounding the ball.
It proved only a temporary reprieve. Athy’s pressure soon told again as they claimed their second try through Fennessy, who stepped sharply inside two defenders after a clean lineout platform before finishing emphatically in the corner. Miller again converted to extend the lead to 20–0.
Just ninety seconds later Athy struck again. A powerful line break from Craig Miller split the defence, and the ball was quickly moved left, where Aidan Henry finished strongly in the corner.
Josh Miller again converted to cap a clinical opening-half display and stretch Athy’s advantage to 27–0 at the interval.

Although Athy did not maintain the same intensity after the restart, they remained largely in control. Tullow came close to opening their account midway through the second half when Adam Johnson was stopped right on the goal line near the right touchline. However, from the resulting lineout Tom Hughes eventually forced his way over following a powerful driving maul. Peter Burgess was unable to add the conversion, leaving the score at 27–5.
That try sparked renewed belief in the Carlow side, and they began probing the Athy defence with greater purpose. With eleven minutes remaining, their forward strength again came to the fore as another lineout platform allowed Hughes to collect before being driven over for his second try. Burgess converted to reduce the deficit to fifteen points. However, the champions responded impressively. With four minutes remaining Fennessy completed his hat-trick, finishing on the left wing after sustained attacking pressure, with Miller producing an excellent conversion from the corner to extend the lead to 34–12.
Tom Sheedy almost added another late score following a brilliant individual run but was stopped just short of the line. Moments later Athy secured their fifth try when Aidan Henry broke strongly down the flank before slipping a well-timed inside pass to Culann Carbery, who finished confidently.
Late consolation tries from captain Scott Caldbeck and Shane Duffy reduced the margin slightly, but Athy’s first-half display ensured they secured a deserved victory and lifted their seventh Provincial Towns Cup title and second in succession.
