Former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has been announced as the new head coach at Israeli Premier League outfit Maccabi Tel Aviv FC.

Keane, Ireland's greatest ever goalscorer (68 goals) and most capped (146 caps) international, is set to arrive in Tel Aviv in the coming days and begin preparations for the forthcoming season.

The ex-Spurs and Liverpool attacker told the club's website: "I am delighted to take on this challenge at Maccabi. My team and I look forward to beginning work and we have confidence in our ability to do what is necessary to prepare the team for the coming season."

The 42-year-old was most recently working alongside Sam Allardyce at Leeds United while also having past assistant managerial experience with the Republic of Ireland and Middlesbrough.

Maccabi’s owner, Mitch Goldhar, added: "Robbie brings the mentality, character, energy and focus of a winner, traits he exhibited everywhere he played. These characteristics now combined with ambitions to succeed as a coach are aligned with our objectives at Maccabi."
