Naas native and former Kildare minor footballer inducted into rugby Hall of Fame following stellar career

Naas native Geordan Murphy was inducted into the Rugby Players of Ireland Hall of Fame at the annual Rugby Players Ireland Awards night on Wednesday night. Murphy, who was educated at Newbridge College, spent his entire club career with Leicester Tigers and is one of the English side's most decorated ever players, captaining the side in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons to successive English Premiership titles. He earned 74 caps for Ireland over a 12-year period and amassed 98 points in total in a green jersey, with his last big appearance coming when he captained Ireland against New Zealand in 2010. Murphy retired from rugby in 2013 after a 16 year playing career with the Tigers. Before he moved across the water, Murphy lined out for the Kildare minor footballers in the mid 1990s and was considered to be a star of the future for the senior ranks before he chose to stick with the oval ball exclusively. A wise decision by all accounts. https://twitter.com/RugbyPlayersIRE/status/862427507852750848 "It is a great honour and privilege for me to be recognised by the rugby community in Ireland", Murphy said on the announcement of his induction. "While I have spent the majority of my career abroad, my home has always been very special to me. I always enjoyed returning to Lansdowne Road and lining out alongside many of those who I now join in the Hall of Fame. I will always treasure those memories."
