There's a good reason lights are turned off at the Athy junction on M9
20:30 Saturday 13th of January 2018

Have you every wondered why the lights suddenly disappear at Junction 3 (Athy) on the M9?

Motorists often complain they nearly miss the turn-off because of poor visibility after dark.

However it has emerged that the Junction 3 southbound is part of a pilot project for turning off public lights to save energy.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) explained that:

"Junction 3 on the M9 is part of a pilot scheme for the switch-off and removal of public lighting which is surplus to that required under present Lighting Design Standards."
