New snow threat for Ireland as unusual jet stream sets us up for weather u-turn

Snow could return to Ireland this week as cold air moves over Ireland

New snow threat for Ireland as unusual jet stream sets us up for weather u-turn

Ireland could be about to return to colder weather with a new snow threat on the latest weather models.

Forecaster Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel made the prediction in his latest update to followers on social media.

"It’s hard to believe that a little over a week ago I was able to whizz about the frozen ponds of the Bog of Allen, which was abruptly followed by Storms Isha and Storm Jocelyn and a return to much milder weather for the time of year.

"But with the final month of meteorological winter ahead the question remains as to whether or not winter will make a return in advance of March and the beginning of our spring season. In short, the answer is increasingly yes," he added.

"Indications are now pointing towards a more wavy and somewhat weaker jet towards the end of the first week of February with colder interludes of air to the north likely to push south across Ireland, leading to an increased risk of wintry precipitation.

"Given the timelines it’s impossible to give any more details just now, other than there’s an increased risk of colder spells through the beginning of February. Between now and then our weather looks rather mixed for the week ahead as we lie between the warmer and colder air masses.

"On Monday, Ireland lies directly under this boundary with an areas of low pressure to the southeast and weather fronts draped across the country. This will lead to outbreaks of rain for many, though some models point towards a risk of snow in some upland areas.

"At the moment the snow risk is highest above 400 metres in southeast Munster, Leinster along with the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Gullian in Ulster. There may be some issues with snow or ice on higher routes across these regions, such as the Wicklow or Sally Gaps.

"For now it’s a dry picture picture for most across the country except for some outbreaks of drizzle in the far northwest. Tomorrow will be overcast for many with rain spreading from the west as low pressure tracks to the southeast of the country," he concluded.
