Weather warnings expiring today marks end of 'persistant' rain but flood risk will continue

Met Éireann issues weather warning update with floods to continue into next week

Met Éireann has issued weather warning updates with risks of flooding set to continue across Ireland into next week. 

There is an Orange Rain warning in place for Louth until 12pm, while a Yellow Rain warning for Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, and Meath is also iin place until the same time. 

The national weather forecaster is warning that floods and travel disruptions are likely to continue into next week. 

Localised and river flooding will peak this morning.

The National Director for Fire and Emergency Management has said that people have had to be rescued from cars every day this week. 

Keith Leonard was speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland and has advised people to slow down and not drive through floods.

"If you come across flooded water, turn back, do not drive into it," he said.

On the plus side, he added that last night's rainfall was not as heavy as had been predicted.

"We're hopeful that we might get away today without too much damage to property, but I think you'll see roads flooded and particularly along those coastal areas, I think you're going to see more coastal overtopping throughout today and tomorrow," Keith said. 

Once the weather warnings expire, that will mark the end of the "persistant and heavy rain," but not the end of flood risks.
