By Robert Cribbin 11:16 Friday 8th of March 2019

The Republic of Ireland have named a provisional squad for the European Championship Qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia later this month and it sees Kildare native Mark Travers named for the first time.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper is currently plying his trade at AFC Bournemouth after making the move from Shamrock Rovers in 2016.

Travers played his schoolboy football for Cherry Orchard and has played underage football for Ireland from the age of 15.

Along with Caomhan Kelleher, Travers will also be part of the Under 21 Squad who under the new tutelage of Stephen Kenny take on Luxembourg in their opening game at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday the 24th of March.

Travers is one of three players to be called up to the Senior squad for the first time along with Newport County’s Padraig Amond and Luton Town’s James Collins.

Kelleher, Jimmy Dunne and Kieran O’Hara have been in the squad before but are still looking for their first caps.

The double header at the end of the month will be Mick McCarthy’s first games in charge after replacing Martin O’Neill as manager.
