3 Kildare men feature as UCD win first Sigerson Cup title for 20 years

Much of the narrative surrounding Kildare in 2015 was concerning players who weren’t involved with the team. Hugh Mc Grillen and Morgan O’Flaherty announced that they would not be part of the Kildare panel for 2015 before the season started, but Tomás O’Connor’s decision to leave the panel in April came as quite a shock. The defeat to Dublin in the Leinster Championship semi-final also marked the end of David Hyland’s and Darroch Mulhall’s involvement with Kildare in 2015. The Athy duo opted to go the States for the remainder of the summer.

UCD won their first Sigerson Cup title since 1996 as they edged a real battle of attrition against DCU in Ulster University this afternoon.

Athy clubmates David Hyland(pictured above) and Niall Kelly both started for the south Dublin college, with Hyland impressing as part of a full-back line that kept a much heralded DCU full-forward line scoreless from play.

It was a tough outing for Niall Kelly as the conditions laid waste to any notion of intricate forward play, but the Athy man was still heavily involved for the eventual winners.

Leixlip's Tommy Moolick made a late appearance from the bench for UCD as he continues his comeback from injury.

Athy midfielder Kevin Feely lined out at full-back for DCU, and was one of their more impressive performers on the day, though some poor play further up the field meant that the north Dublin college were unable to retain their title.
