Joe Mallon SFC round two losers section replay

There was no separating these two sides when they met last Sunday, but Castledermot came back the stronger after the four-day turnaround to seal their place in the third round of the Joe Mallon SFC, and a meeting with county champions Sarsfields.

They were deserving winners as Allenwood really only played in patches, and Ronan Byrne's side will now have to turn their attentions to a relegation semi-final against St Laurence's in a couple of weeks time.

A lively opening to the game saw the teams tied at 0-3 apiece with a little under 10 minutes on the clock, and both sides were playing fairly contrasting styles. While Allenwood packed the defence and looked to break forward using handpassing more often than not, Castledermot were letting the ball in longer with accurate foot-passing feeding their full-forward line.

It was one of the members of that line that opened their account in the third minute as Gavin Keating sliced over a lovely point from 35 metres off his right. Johnny Byrne soon evened things up for Allenwood with a long range score, before Johnny Doyle showed all his class by selling a dummy on the right wing, shifting inside and onto his left and curling over a super point under pressure. A point from distance from Darragh Malone put Allenwood two to the good but they failed to score again for another 22 minutes as Castledermot grabbed a stranglehold of the game until the end of the half.

Emmet O'Keefe nabbed a couple of scores from close range within as many minutes to pull his side level, while a fine score from lively full-forward Fionn O'Gorman put them into the lead once again. They continued their purple patch, though the scoring rate did drop off for a while, but Paddy Whelan eventually put the south Kildare men two clear when he curled a superb effort straight over the black spot from 40 metres out. David Keating then pushed them further ahead with another eye-catching score from out the field, before the same player slotted over the point of the contest as Gavin Farrell played a sumptuous pass down the left touchline to his teammate, Keating raced inside and flicked it over from on front of the posts. That pushed Castledermot four points clear, but Eric Judge knocked over a free shortly before the interval for Allenwood to leave the scores standing at 0-7 to 0-4 in Castledermot's favour at the break.

Damien Henry's side began the second half in good fashion too; they dominated possession for the first couple of minutes before O'Keefe slammed over his third point of the night to keep his team in the driving seat.

Allenwood needed to get back into the game quickly, and they looked to be doing that when Byrne floated over another beauty from distance, while Doyle also created a goal chance for himself that he narrowly missed from 15 metres out. The Allenwood stalwart did pull his side to within two points when he drove through the centre of the field and smashed over a point from the '45, and as Aaron Murphy and Darragh Malone traded long range scores at either end the game was finely poised heading into the final quarter.

It was the 2015 Kildare Intermediate champions who would seize the initiative over the next five minutes as they pulled away with three scores on the trot. Centre-back Pauric Murphy got the first with a neatly struck free from the right wing before Gavin Keating swept over another couple of scores from placed balls soon after. Five points off the pace, Allenwood probably need a goal by this stage but it never looked like coming. They did put some tension into the final few minutes as a free from Doyle was followed by another couple of fabulous points from Byrne, who had been moved to full-forward at this point. Castledermot substitute Anthony Lawlor was then sent off with three minutes left to play following an altercation after he saw a goalbound effort blocked on the line, but it mattered little as another free from Keating and a Dan Gray point pushed Castledermot over the line and into round three.
