Naas RFC 27
Ulster Bank AIL Division 1B round 18
In what is their first year ever competing in the second tier of the Ulster Bank League, Naas RFC have sensationally secured a place in the semi-finals of the competition, and, with yesterday's results going in their favour, they will play that game at home.
They travelled to Galway on Saturday to take on Galwegians in the final game of the league, and despite a sluggish start they managed to overwhelm their opponents on their way to victory.
They fell behind to an early Galwegians penalty, but a try from Warren Larkin after 30 minutes was soon followed by a powerful break from centre Fionn Carr who then set Ben O'Connor up to cross the line. Cillian Dempsey added the two points from a conversion to send Naas into the break with a 12-6 lead.
They came out in confident fashion at the beginning of the second half, and a penalty from Dempsey was backed up by a converted Peter Howard try as Naas eased into a more comfortable lead. Fionn Higgins made sure of the four-try bonus point 20 minutes from time when he crossed the line, and though Galwegians rallied late on, they couldn't make too many inroads towards the Naas lead and the Kildare club ran out comfortable winners.
They will play UL Bohemians in Forenaughts in the promotion playoff semi-final next Sunday at 2.30pm, with the Limerick side losing at home to Dolphin meaning Naas leapfrogged them in the table.
