Kildare hurlers gave a confident performance today against Wicklow in Round 3 of the Bord na Mona Kehoe Cup (loser’s group). As Kildare footballers put in a lacklustre performance against Westmeath in Mullingar, losing by 6 pts, hurling fans at St Conleth's saw a determined Kildare side ensure there was no comeback for the Garden County.
A notable return to the team today was James Burke (Naas), who scored one of Kildare’s goals, along with Brian Byrne (Naas) and super sub, Ryan Casey of Coill Dubh.
Three players made their first starts today with the senior hurlers: Moorefield's Reece Gavin, Ardclough's Aran Kelly and Clane's Mark Doyle, the latter two coming off the bench in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Meath while Doyle came in for the injured Paddy McKenna (Christy Ring Player of the Year).
Kildare lead by 0-08 to 0-07 at half time, with their opponents from the Garden County still very much in contention. However, on resumption of play, the Lilywhites completely dominated with goals from Byrne, Burke and Casey killing off any hopes of a comeback from Wicklow.
Kildare will now face Antrim in the semi-finals to be played in Abbotstown, Dublin next weekend, see this week’s Kildare Post for full coverage.
