The Kildare ladies face a difficult trip to Wexford tomorrow for the opening round of the Leinster Intermediate Football Championship as they begin their first year back in the Intermediate Championship grade.

Having lost each game in last year’s championship and suffered relegation to Division 3 of the National League, the Lilies dropped back down to the second tier just a year on from winning the all-Ireland title in Croke Park.

It has been a much more positive year so far for Kildare, who, under Daniel Moynihan’s stewardship, managed to make it to the semi-final of Division 3 in the league before being comprehensively beaten by Sunday’s opponents, who then went on to win the league final against Meath.

It was the second defeat in the space of three months that Kildare lost out to Wexford in the league, which makes Sunday’s clash all the more daunting. The Lilies will bring some confidence into the game on the back of a more positive league run and safe in the knowledge that this is a young team that is gradually improving.

Three players were named in the Division 3 Team of the Year – Louise Scully, Aisling Curley and Róisín Byrne – and there were a number of the younger players who have steadily progressed throughout 2018.

A place in the Leinster semi-final is at stake on Sunday, and throw-in at Innovate Wexford Park is scheduled for 2pm.
