A Kildare native was at the centre of one of the most watched sporting events on British and Irish television this weekend as a plucky Fleetwood Town side held 2015/16 Premier League champions Leicester City scoreless in the FA Cup third round on Saturday afternoon.
25-year-old Celbridge man Cian Bolger captained the League One side to a 0-0 draw against Claude Puel's Premier League highflyers, putting in a strong display at centre-back to keep their more illustrious opponents at bay. 6'4" Bolger came up against Islam Slimani in the early kick-off, a striker who is the most expensive signing ever for the Foxes after costing them £28 million in 2017.
Played on front of a crowd of just over 5,000 at Highbury Park, Fleetwood kept Leicester City at bay throughout the 90 minutes to force a replay, which will be played at the King Power Stadium.
Bolger actually began his professional career with Leicester, and was named the Academy Player of the Year there in 2009. He has since played with a number of clubs, including Bristol Rovers, Southend, Bury and Fleetwood. He broke into Uwe Rosler's side last season and was voted the Fans' Player of the Year before being made captain.
