Kildare senior footballers will face Westmeath on Sunday next in Round 3 of the O'Byrne Cup. As Cian O'Neill's men take to the pitch at the Downs in Mullingar, kick off 2pm, Kildare's hurlers will be taking on Wicklow in the Kehoe Cup at St Conleth's in Newbridge, also starting at 2pm.

The hurlers alas, will have to start minus the county hurling manager, David Herity as he is still on honeymoon. Despite putting in a very credible performance, Kildare lost their opening game against the Royals, after a penalty shoot-out so the Kildare side should be optimistic of success over their opponents from the Garden County.

Cian O'Neill is staying tight lipped re Kildare's line up for Sunday's game against Westmeath.

"The team will be posted after training tonight" he told KildareNow "But we'll be sticking with the pattern of recent games, in blending youth and experience for Sunday's game".

Amongst the 'youth' were the Lark's Jimmy Hyland, Mark Barrett (Ballymore) and the Monasterevan trio DJ Earley, Padraig Nash and John O’Toole, along with Jason Gibbons (Kilcock) - all members of Kildare's U20 All Ireland winning team.

The Lilywhites were impressive against Carlow in their first outing of the O’Byrne Cup in December, and within a week,  O’Neill’s side proved too much for Offaly and ran out easy winners over the Faithful side.

Westmeath, however struggled to hold Offaly in a recent game, having secured a last minute draw only in extra time from the boot of the superb Paddy Fagan. Again, subs Ger Egan and Ronan O’Toole proved vital for Westmeath in the second half in what was a close battle  culminating in a 0-11 draw.

But based on recent form, Kildare fans can be hopeful of the Lilywhites having the edge over the Lake county, 2pm at The Downs, Mullingar on Sunday, January 6.

St Conleth's GAA Grounds, Newbridge - 2pm for Kildare v Wicklow in the Kehoe Cup.
