Naas senior squad travelled to Corinthian Park, Galway for their round 12 Ulster Bank League game on Saturday.. Despite the generally wet and heavy conditions, the game attracted a large contingent of enthusiastic home and visiting supporters who were thoroughly entertained throughout.
Following an outstanding early try by wing Rob O’Connor, Naas dominated the first period and by the interval had extended their lead to 17 points from a further try by centre Johnny Delaney with conversions and penalty kick by influential scrum half Peter Osborne, whilst Corinthians remained scoreless.
In the opening minutes of the second period the Naas defence was severely tested and they might have conceded an early try but for offside errors by Corinthians. Naas wing Rob O’Connor however struck again in the 46th minute with another outstanding try which rocked Corinthians hopes of a comeback. Fullback Fionn Higgins and he got over for two further tries in the 60th and 78th minutes respectively, all of which were expertly converted by Peter Osborne, to give Naas a superb and well deserved 38-0 bonus point win.
In the 7th minute, Naas opened the scoring with a superb try scored by wing Rob O’Connor in the right corner. This arose from a ruck on the Corinthians 22 in the centre that was secured by Peter Osborne who then combined with David Aherne, Ben Swindlehurst and Johnny Delaney to put Rob O’Connor through.
In the 18thminute, Naas attacked through the centre from a lineout on the Corinthians 10m line involving Peter Osborne, Ryan Casey, Will O’Brien and Johnny Delaney taking play to the hosts 22 but they subsequently knocked on in contact giving a scrum to Corinthians from which they secured and cleared.
Naas wing Johnny Delaney scored a brilliant and timely try in the 25th minute to extend the Naas lead to 14 points, following the conversion by Peter Osborne. This arose from a ruck on the Naas 10m line with possession secured by David Aherne and Johne Murphy who then made a 20m break down the left flank and offloaded inside to Johnny Delaney who finished superbly.
In the 36th minute Naas won a penalty at the breakdown following some excellent defensive work by Ben Swindlehurst, Stephen Kinneavy, Adam Coyle, Paul Monahan, Ryan Casey and Jason Harney. Peter Osborne kicked superbly to extend the Naas lead to 17 points.
The final minutes of the first period were dominated by Naas with influential attacks involving John Sutton, Paul Tolofua, Will O’ Brien and Fionn Higgins.
Corinthians dominated the opening minutes of the second period and took play deep into the Naas 22 using their lineout and maul to good effect on the left flank. However they were blown for accidental offside just metres from the Naas line and the opportunity was lost.
Naas wing Rob O’Connor scored an excellent try in the 46th minute which proved a significant set-back for Corinthians. This arose from a lineout on halfway that was brilliently won by Stephen Kinneavy to set up an attacking move down the centre involving John Sutton, Henry Bryce and Fionn Higgins with Rob O’Connor powering over on the right flank. The reliable conversion again by Peter Osborne further extended the Naas lead to 24-0.
Corinthians had a further opportunity in the 50th minute when Naas conceded an offside penalty on their 22. They kicked for the left touchline and again attempted to maul over the Naas line but were again blown for accidental offside allowing Naas to evantually clear from the scrum.
Naas struck again in the 60th minute with a superb try by Fionn Higgins after breaking from halfway and kicking ahead twice to follow up any touch down for a bonus point fourth try. This arose from a ruck with posession being secured by Johnny Holmes to set up an attack in the centre involving Ryan Casey and Johne Murphy who finally combined with Fionn Higgins on halfway.
Corinthians had a further opportunity in the 75th minute when they again took play deep into the Naas 22 but handling errors just short of the Naas line thwarted their efforts and Naas cleared mostly through the defensive efforts of David Aherne, David Barron, Bob Brian, Johnny Holmes and Andrew Shirley.
It was Naas who had the final say when their influential wing Rob O'Connor scored his third try following a blistering attack up the right flank and which also involved John Sutton, David Barron and Peter Osborne. This was superbly converted by Peter Osborne to wrap up the final score at 38-0.
Naas senior squad next host league leaders Banbridge on Saturday 30th January, for their round 13 UBL game which kicks off at 2:30 pm at Forenaughts. This is an important top of league encounter and all are invited to come out and support the Naas senior team, especially as there remains only 3 home games to the end of season (also including Cashel on 20th February and Skerries on 2nd April).
