Rathmore and Kildare claim silverware in Ardclough bowling tournament
12:10 Sunday 10th of June 2018

The Ardclough annual indoor bowling triples tournament in honour of the late Tony Hegarty took place on Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd June in the Ardclough GAA hall. With thirty-two teams competing it made for a very hectic schedule to complete the event in the two-day time frame.

Given that it was played on the Bank Holiday weekend and the weather so good also it still managed to draw a good attendance.

There was a lot of great games and plenty of excitement to keep the spectators occupied and happy throughout the event. There were also some shocks along the way as some of the top teams and favourites took a tumble in the early rounds. The biggest shock of the tournament was the inexperienced Abbey Bowls team knocking out Baltinglass/Kiltegan whom many would have highly fancied and favoured to make it to the final at least.

St. Laurence’s also reached the quarter final with a team of newcomers before exiting the competition, which was a great achievement in its own right.

In the Cup final Rathmore saw off the challenge of Rathangan. This was the fourth final in succession that the Rathmore side contested, losing the previous three, so joy at last in a well-deserved victory.

Rathmore: Ann Shaw, Tony Fitzpatrick and Frank Feane.

Rathangan: Paddy Dunne, Eileen Smullen and Tony Smullen.

In the Shield final Kildare defeated Caragh to take the honours. Kildare showed tremendous form throughout the tournament and deserved the victory.

Kildare: Una Downey, Fintan Downey and Mark Caldwell.

Caragh: Phil Ryan, Peter Hunt, Breff O’Rourke and sub Dom Kavanagh.

A special word of thanks must go to the Ardclough catering staff, one of the most difficult tasks of all and they made sure there was no shortage of refreshments and deserve great credit for a job well done.

And congrats to The Ardclough club for a wonderful and well run tournament. Of course lets not forget the teams for their participation in making it all worthwhile.
