All-Ireland winning Tyrone defender Cathal McCarron will not be lining out for Kildare in 2018, despite the fact he is poised to transfer clubs to Athy in the near future.
The experienced corner-back is poised to transfer to the beaten 2015 county finalists in the new year after indicating he has played his last game with his home club Dromore, but Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has poured cold water on any speculation that he might line out for Cian O'Neill's Kildare side if he does happen to make the switch to Athy.
“There is talk that he is changing club – that’s the story,” said Harte, who is quoted on hoganstand.com.
“I don’t think that switch has been sanctioned through on a transfer yet though. But regardless if he does move or not, he’ll still be a Tyrone player, he won’t be leaving the county.”
McCarron's links to Athy is that his girlfriend is from the area, and the Red Hands ace trained with the club during his time at the Cuan Mhuire treatment centre where he was undergoing rehabilitation for a gambling addiction that caused huge upheaval in his life. McCarron cited the help he received from those in the town and those involved with Athy GAA as one of the reasons he was able to kick his gambling addiction
