Lasair Bhríde/Brigid’s Flame

Lasair Bhríde/Brigid’s Flame, a celebration of Irish Traditional Music in honour of Brigid, featuring a world premiere of a new descriptive piece, “Bandia” for uilleann pipes and fiddle, by Kildare composer Sandie Purcell takes place this Sunday, February 1 at 8pm in The Dew Drop Inn, Kill, Co. Kildare W91F634.

Featuring: Mark Redmond (uilleann pipes), Sandie Purcell & Rossagh Cusack (fiddle and songs), Aoife Kelly & Charlie Le Brun (concertina and flute), and Michael Harrison & Janine Redmond (fiddle and accordion.)

Lasair Bhríde (Brigid’s Flame), taking place on the first of February, is a celebration of Irish Traditional Music, of women, and the legacy of Brigid. The concert will feature performances from some of Ireland’s top Traditional Musicians.

Supported by Spirit of Brigid and Kildare County Council, Lasair Bhríde will also premiere a new composition, “Bandia” (Goddess), by Kildare Composer, Sandie Purcell.

A twelve minute descriptive work for uilleann pipes and fiddle, “Bandia” will be performed by virtuoso Wexford piper, Mark Redmond along with Sandie Purcell.

Purcell describes the different sections and tunes within the piece as representations of Brigid, and female strength:  Cineáltas (kindness), Eagna (wisdom), Cinneadh (determination), Neart (strength), Áilleacht (beauty) and Croí (heart).

The night will also feature a special recitation of the poem “Éirí Amach an Trodaí” (The Warrior Rising) written by Irish poet, Dairena Ní Chinnéide.
