All-Ireland Minor B semi-final

Kildare edged their way towards an All-Ireland final on Saturday afternoon when they pipped Waterford in a thrilling Minor B Championship semi-final.

It was a case of what might have been for the Déise as they spurned a late chance to draw level, as with Kildare a point up in injury time and having just conceded a free in front of the posts on the 21 metre line, a  simple tap over the bar would have sent the game to extra time.

Instead Waterford went short in search of a goal to secure the win but to their dismay Kildare backs stood firm cleared the danger and with a sigh of relief on the final whistle find themselves in an All Ireland B final where they will play Roscommon after they defeated Antrim by two points in their semi final.

Played in front of a small crowd and in very warm conditions referee Barry Redmond got proceedings underway.

First half goals from Clodagh Carrol and Annie O Neill helping Waterford to a two-point advantage at the break leaving the score at 2-7 to Kildare’s 0-11.

The game was level after 10 mins of the second half and both sides were quick into making changes as players started to tire in the hot conditions. Kildare took the initiative and hit 3 unanswered points, two via Molly Dagg each side of a pointed free from the hard working Neasa Dooley. As the half wore on scores were hard to come by as both defences rebuffed any danger. Waterford reduced the deficit with two pointed frees from Aoife Brasil and Sarah Lacey. Kildares Nanci Murphy responded with a fine point on her weak side swinging her left foot high to see the shot hit the target. Kildare’s Lauren Murtagh was sinbinned after a heavy challenge on a Waterford player bearing down on goals and the Lilywhites finished the game with 14 players. On resumption of play Brigita Valuntaite converted the free leaving a point between the sides.

Waterford went in search of a score and Kildare retreated, defending in numbers desperately trying to keep them out. Injury time was now being played and after sustained pressure from Waterford they won the free and in a very scoreable position it looked to everyone that extra time was looming.

Instead of taking the score, Waterford went short proving to be the wrong decision as Kildare hung on for the win.
