Midlands woman who went abroad for ‘butt lift’ is refused legal aid

Judge Andrew Cody said the woman had liposuction, a tummy tuck and a butt lift
The woman (32), who has a Portarlington address and didn’t appear in court as she was recovering from surgery, is accused of stealing a Supersonic Hair Dryer valued at €200 from Fletcher’s Hardware in Portarlington on January 2, 2025.
Judge Andrew Cody told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that legal aid had previously been assigned to Solicitor Aonghus McCarthy, who wasn’t in court today and has since come off the legal aid register.
Judge Cody said he had learned the woman has had “liposuction, tummy tuck and butt lift” which he said would indicate the surgery “was carried abroad since legal aid was assigned” to the woman.
He noted that Aonghus McCarthy had now “retired from the legal aid scheme” and said he was discharging the legal aid which had been granted to the woman from today’s date.
Judge Cody directed that the media not publish the name of the woman who wasn’t present at the courthouse.
“She is still recovering from that cosmetic surgery,” he explained.
He adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on September 17.
