The speeds were detected on National Slow Down Day

Gardaí based in County Kildare detected ‘ridiculously high’ speeds on one road during the most recent National Slow Down Day.

According to the official An Garda Síochána Kildare page on Facebook, Naas Roads Policing Unit conducted a speed check on the R445 at Littleconnell, where the speed limit is 80 kilometres per hour (km / h).

Posting on its official Facebook page, An Garda Síochána Kildare said the speeds detected were “ridiculously high” and warned: “Speed kills.”

The force reminded motorists that an 80km/h speed limit is “not a target” but the maximum permitted speed.

Meanwhile a motorist travelling at 128km/h in an 80km/h zone was detected by Gardaí in Co Kildare during National #Slow Down Day.

The vehicle was recorded travelling 48km/h over the speed limit on the R403 at Naas during the 24-hour national operation on Monday, August 31.

Each driver detected during the Kildare enforcement operation faces a €160 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice and three penalty points.

National #Slow Down Day was carried out by An Garda Síochána in partnership with the Road Safety Authority and other road safety partners as schools returned for the first full week of the new school year.

More than 1,000 vehicles were detected travelling above the applicable speed limit across the country during the operation.

The highest speed recorded nationally was 194km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N56 at Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Other detections included a motorist travelling at 99km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road in Dublin and another travelling at 104km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Dublin Road in Galway.

Gardaí said particular emphasis was placed on traffic around schools during opening and closing times.

The operation aimed to remind motorists of the dangers of excessive or inappropriate speed, encourage compliance with speed limits and deter dangerous driving.

Gardaí urged motorists to “slow down and arrive alive” and said speed enforcement would continue nationwide.
