Funding has been secured to help provide a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Liffey Bridge in Celbridge after the National Transport Authority confirmed that they will facilitate a project that examine the best approach.

Fianna Fáil TD Frank O'Rourke confirmed that the funding has been secured, and a preliminary design will be carried out before the public are consulted on the matter.

“I have now been informed that the NTA will provide funds to consider proposals to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can safely cross over the Liffey. The current situation is unacceptable from a safety perspective, and we need to provide a safer option for both vulnerable road users,” revealed Deputy O'Rourke.

“I have worked with Kildare Co Council, the NTA and the Department of Transport to secure funding to provide both a short term alleviation measures for pedestrians and cyclists using the current Liffey Bridge, and also to provide a long term solution to secure a new bridge for Celbridge.”

“We are making progress. Funding is now provided to examine options to assist cyclists and pedestrians.  A consultant will be appointed within the next two months and the options for consideration will include: upgrading the current foot bridge, consider a new cantilever foot bridge similar to footbridges at Chapelizod or Newbridge, or a different alternative to provide a safe option for the vulnerable road users trying to cross the Liffey.”

Deputy O'Rourke also suggested that funding needs to be secured for a new bridge over the Liffey in Celbridge, and he is hoping for a variety of proposals to be put forward in the coming months.

“This is a positive step and I believe that all stakeholders now realise the importance of providing this short term solution for pedestrians and cyclists, but also the need for a long term solution. Celbridge does need to secure funding for a new bridge over the Liffey. I will continue to keep close to this project and I look forward to proposals in the coming months,” Concluded Deputy O’Rourke.
