Rathangan photographer's book voted in top two books of the year by Easons' readers

The Irish Civil War in Colour by Michael Barry and John O'Byrne has been voted in the top two in Easons' Book of the Year 2022 poll.

Today Friday, January 6, the bookseller announced that Three Castles Burning by Donal Fallon was its Favourite Book of 2022 based on the consumer-focused poll.

The Eason Favourite Book of the Year was voted by over 5,000 Eason customers throughout the month of December.

The winners were chosen from 50 of the top selling books published in 2022 and narrowed down to the top ten with Three Castles Burning coming out tops as the overall winner.

Three Castles Burning is a companion book to the popular Dublin history podcast of the same name by Dublin-based lecturer

“Eason  has a proud heritage of supporting Irish publishing and Irish authors and this focus on Irish writing evidently resonates with Irish book readers with Irish authors securing eight out of 10 spots in the online poll,” it said.

Rathangan photographer, John O'Byrne produced The Irish Civil War in Colour with Michael Barry and this came in second place.

On its website, Eason describes the book: “Here is the story of Ireland’s Civil War in colour — a defining moment in Irish history brought to life for the first time in hand-coloured photographs.

“The events of 1922–1923 are revealed using photographs painstakingly hand-coloured by John O’Byrne. His attention to detail gives a vivid authenticity that brings the events alive. Many of these photographs, carefully selected from archives and private collections, have never been published before. They carry informative captions by Michael B. Barry, based on extensive historical research”.
