Privacy protection rules mean that evidence provided by CCTV images in some instances cannot be made available for the gardaí.
Newbridge councillor Noel Heavey said the gardaí should have access to “whatever data is available.”
At a Kildare County Council meeting, he asked for information about the law governing the used of KCC’s CCTV cameras “by other agencies.”
KCC official Celina Barrett said that the council has to have a “legal basis” to collect data and the gardaí must have a legal basis to request it.
Ms Barrett said that not all of the updated legislation has come into force.
She also said KCC has accepted an invitation from the Department of Transport to be a member of a working group set up to assist in the implementation of the new legislation, which governs the use of cameras on roads to obtain data.
She said the council will “implement all changes required under any legislation in the operation of CCTV cameras."
