A total of €4,000 was divided between a number of charities at Naas District Court on Thursday, January 19 last.
Judge Desmond Zaidan accepted the money as a gesture of remorse from a defendant aged in his 20s who previously pleaded guilty to possessing an unknown quantity of drugs.
The judge divided the money into eight lots of €500 and ordered for the money to go to the following causes (€500 each): the Turas le Cheile bereavement service, Cuan Mhuire addiction treatement centre in Athy, the Lourdes Fund of Newbridge, the Lourdes Fund of Portarlington, Focus Ireland, One in Four (which is a charity that helps survivors of childhood sexual abuse), the de Paul homeless charity, and The Dining Room in Newbridge (which is a group that assists those living in food poverty in the town).
Once this was done, Judge Zaidan applied the Probation Act on the man's case.
