A county councillor has said that accountability is needed when it comes to developments within the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD).
The comments were made by Fianna Fáil Cllr Suzanne Doyle at the latest MD meeting, which was held on Wednesday, February 21 last.
Sinn Féin Cllr Noel Connolly put forward the following motion at the meeting: "That Kildare County Council (KCC) implement traffic calming measures along Rathbride Road from the railway bridge to Kildare town AFC."
His motion was seconded by the Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Paddy Curran.
Commenting further on his motion, Cllr Connolly said: "I was sent photographs of a recent accident at this area."
He added that the area serves 'as a major artery' to different schools, and as a result, CCTV should be used to monitor traffic in the area.
Cllr Connolly also commended locals for bringing awareness to the area on KFM radio and also via a fundraiser.
The 'patchwork quilt' comments were made by Cllr Suzanne Doyle, while the original motion was submitted by Cllr Noel Connolly.
In addition, he said he welcomed the increased presence of road traffic gardaí monitoring the area.
Cllr Doyle also offered her view on the situation: "There has been a patchwork quilt of developments here."
"There should be accountability here (for the developers)... the planning conditions have to mean something," she added.
Brendan Cuddy, who is a senior executive engineer with KCC, pointed to an incidence in which a meeting with local residents in one particular Kildare area resulted in speed detection signs being implemented.
However, she added that 'a fairly serious design would be required' for the area, in addition to a notable amount of funding, which could not be covered by Local Property Tax funds.
In response to Cllr Connolly’s query, KCC said: "The MD office agrees to undertake a technical assessment at this location; any proposed works are subject to budget availability."
