A local councillor has called for more garda resources to be implemented across County Kildare.

The suggestion by a Fine Gael Senator to implement 'pop-up' garda stations was described by Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney as 'sticking a plaster on a problem.'

Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne previously said that 'pop-up' garda stations should be used to help communities that are currently underserved by the force.

She added that she wants to see the temporary set ups expanded to a number of areas around the country.

However, Cllr Angela Feeney, who represents the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District, has disagreed with this suggestion.

Cllr Feeney said: "Currently, 15 gardaí in total are assigned to Maynooth Garda Station, which operates on a part-time basis, and the station is only open Monday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the station is open from 10am to 12 midday.

"A similarly sized town in Kildare such as Leixlip has 68 gardaí and a fully-staffed, full-time, station.

"People want to feel safe and with 17,000 of a population in Maynooth and growing, almost similar number of students, it's unacceptable that we have to fight for this basic service, but fight we will."

"A pop up solution isn't the answer... a permanent full-time garda station is the only answer to fighting crime," Cllr Feeney concluded.
