Stagg Disappointed at Deferral of North Kildare Gaelcholaiste Opening to September 2020

New school opening next year

Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg has expressed his disappointment at the decision by the Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board to defer the opening of the North Kildare Gaelcholaiste in Maynooth to September 2020.

The school, stated Mr. Stagg, was due to open this September and accommodation had been sourced in the Manor Mils Centre, but according to KWETB there was insufficient expressions of interest for enrolments this September, whilst there is a high number of expressions of interest for September, 2020.

KWETB have also confirmed that the New Gaelcholaiste will be located at the current Maynooth Post Primary School from September 2020 as the school will have moved to the Maynooth Education Campus by then and that enrolments for the Gaelcholaiste will commence in Autumn 2019.

As for the reason for the deferral, Mr. Stagg stated that in his opinion the delay in appointing a Principal for the New Gaelcholaiste did not help in driving the process forward for opening in September, 2019.

"Normally when a new school is opening a principal is appointed from the 1st September of the school year prior to the opening of the new school. In practice this should have seen the principal for the Gaelcholaiste appointed in September 2018, but the Principal was not appointed until 13 May, 2019," he said.

In conclusion Kildare North Labour General Election Candidate Emmet Stagg stated that whilst there is a delay in opening the North Kildare Gaelcholaiste in Maynooth, 'we can still look forward positively to the opening of the Gaelcholaiste next year and the provision of the choice for pupils who wish to continue their education' from Gaelscoils to Secondary Education in the Irish Medium.
