Investigation launched after man dies in Kildare Garda Station

Man dies in Garda custody at Kildare Garda Station on Saturday, October 31
Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has launched an independent investigation following the death of a man in his 30s while in Garda custody at Kildare Garda Station on Saturday, October 31.
The man was found unresponsive at approximately 9:35am while in custody.
Gardaí provided medical assistance at the scene, but he was subsequently pronounced dead.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.
Fiosrú confirmed it received a referral from An Garda Síochána on Saturday following the incident in County Kildare.
The police watchdog's on-call team of investigators attended the scene, and its independent investigation is ongoing.
Under Section 203 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, the Garda Commissioner is required to refer matters to Fiosrú where circumstances indicate that the actions or omissions of Garda personnel may have resulted in a person's death or serious harm.
Fiosrú said a referral does not necessarily mean that a garda or gardaí have been accused of wrongdoing.
The purpose of the independent investigation is to establish whether any act or omission by Garda personnel may have contributed to the death or serious harm of a person.
As the matter is now under investigation, Fiosrú said it could not make any further comment, in accordance with Section 208(1)(b) of the 2024 Act.
No further information has been released regarding the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
