Kildare judge criticises the premiums demanded by car insurance companies

Fall in awards for claims has not resulted in reduced bills
The premiums demanded by motor insurance companies have come under fire from a judge.
Judge Desmond Zaidan told Naas District Court that despite a 70% fall in awards made to people claiming against the companies, the cost of insuring a car has not fallen enough.
The reduced settlements have taken place following the setting up of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board.

Judge Zaidan said that anyone aged 18 will still “be lucky to get a quote for less than €5,000.”
He added that people are still “paying through the nose” for motor insurance cover and this is having an impact on the cost of living.
He was commenting on a case that came before him concerning a motorist who had no cover because of an administrative error outside the driver’s control.
The motorist was not convicted.
