Extra parking spaces for Kildare estate ruled out for 2025

Local authority told councillor that “only funded works can be considered in 2025.”

Designated parking ruled out for Prosperous estate by Kildare County Council

The introduction of designated parking spaces in Chorra Choill Estate, Prosperous has been ruled out for this year by Kildare County Council.

The need for designated parking spaces in the estate was highlighted by Cllr Paula Mulroe (SD) at a recent Clane-Maynooth municipal district meeting.

Cllr Mulroe called for the introduction of ten designated parking spaces this year at Chorra Choill Estate, “subject to funding.”

Addressing the committee meeting last Friday (February 7), Cllr Mulroe said that while she appreciated the council's response, this was an ongoing issue in Chorra Choill Estate and similar mature estates where there currently is no designated parking.

With housing prices being as they are, she said, there were “multiple generations” living in each home, with two or three cars per house now parking at houses, including up on footpaths.

This was causing difficulty for elderly people in Chorra Choill Estate, she said, as they tried to navigate their way around the estate.

There was also potential impact on emergency services access, she said, and she called for a detailed costing on the provision of designated parking spaces in the estate.

Supporting Cllr Mulroe's motion, Cllr Brenda Wyse (FG) said this was an old estate where a number of young families had moved in, resulting in “plenty of cars” being in the estate.

Cllr Wyse said there is “plenty of space” for designated parking in Chorra Choill Estate, and the majority of residents appeared to be in favour of this.

Cars were parked on the footpath at the moment he said, because “there's no other option”, and he did not believe it would be a particularly big job to introduce parking spaces to the estate.

A council official noted there are “a lot of demands” on the council at present, but if funding was available, then it's something that could be looked at.

It was agreed that a costing could be carried out on the implementation of designated parking in the estate.

However, a report issued by Kildare County Council effectively ruled out the works for this year.

The report stated “there currently is no funding allocated to this proposal”, and continued: “Due to the demands on the existing resources in the Municipal District, only funded works can be considered in 2025.”
