The late Ernie McMullen with Fiona Dowling who works at Newbridge Day Care Centre
Members of the McMullen family are set to embark on a mammoth challenge in aid of Newbridge Day Care Centre, and in memory of their father and grandfather, Ernie McMullen.
On Sunday April 6, members of the family will cycle from the River Lagan in Belfast to the River Liffey in Newbridge, Co Kildare as part of the 'Day2Care' Lagan to Liffey Cycle 2025, to raise funds for Newbridge Day Care Centre.
According to Ernie's son, Jim McMullen, Ernie “loved” Newbridge Day Care Centre. As well as providing a range of day care services for the elderly, he explains, it does “much more than that.”
“Ray, Fiona and the staff and volunteers provide a haven for our older people, a place where they can socialise with their peers, where they get a delicious meal and all sorts of entertainment”, Jim says.
“The kitchens supply the popular Meals on Wheels service for those who cannot go to the centre in person.”
Since its inception in 1991, thousands of families have benefited from the services Newbridge Day Care Centre provides.
It is, Jim points out, a vital cog in the Newbridge community, where older people are treated with dignity and respect in a safe and caring environment.
Newbridge Day Care Centre relies heavily on donations to maintain the range of services they provide and that's why Jim is reaching out for help.
“In memory of our father, Ernie McMullen, our family are running this fundraiser”, Jim says.
“Ernie was always a proud Belfast man, so to honour him, the cycle will start on the Falls Road, Belfast and follow the River Lagan for a stretch before taking the old Dublin Road for 211 km to the River Liffey in Newbridge, Ernie’s home for forty-six years.”
Ernie’s eldest grandson Patrick O’Sullivan with his brother Eoin and their brother-in-law, Jamie Kenna will cycle the complete route while other members of the McMullen family will cycle the route in relays.
Stationary bikes will be available in the Day Care Centre for anyone who would like to join in the fun led by Anne McMullen.
