Kildare County Council is to write to the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) requesting they attend the September meeting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District.

The move follows a motion tabled by Cllr Tim Durkan (FG), who sought both the NTA and RSA to appear in council chambers to discuss the upgrading of Celbridge Road.

Cllr Durkan's motion follows a recent incident on Celbridge Road where a young schoolchild was knocked down.

Much of the July meeting of the Clane-Maynooth MD on Friday 4 July was taken up with motions relating to road safety on Celbride Road, with councillors calling for a 30 km/h limit in parts, and dedicated school wardens to patrol two primary schools in the area.

Speaking on his own motion, Cllr Durkan said he acknowledged the “positivity” that has occurred in discussions between the NTA and Kildare County Council, and he would ask Members to support his request for the NTA and RSA to meet in council chambers in September to discuss Celbridge Road.

This, he said, would be in an effort to “maintain pressure” on both bodies, and to ensure that the project is delivered in a timely fashion.

“11 years is 11 years too long”, he said.

Following agreement from Members, a letter will now be written to the NTA and the RSA requesting they attend the September meeting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District committee.
