Darragh Kirwan was man of the match as Kildare beat Limerick in Croke Park to lift the Tailteann Cup trophy. The Naas forward registered 0-8 of his side’s 1-24 tally and raised green and orange flags at crucial points in the decider.
He said, “It’s been a good, up and down, but ultimately we have gotten over the line and we have secured Sam Maguire football for next year, so we’d be more than happy with that. Did we get the full performance today? No. We did get bits of it, like the season, we got glimmers here and there. 20 minutes here, 20 minutes there.
“I am more so relieved than thrilled. It was a very very close game. We expected nothing more to be fair. Just relieved to be honest, it was there to be won and move on. Hopefully it starts momentum for the years to come, there is a good age profile in the group.”
It has been a difficult year for the Naas man, he has been unable to string together three games in a row at any point during the intercounty season having been hampered by injuries throughout.
How was the build up to the final since beating Fermanagh?
“Terrible to be honest with you,” Kirwan said. “I didn’t really take to the field at all. It has just been one of those years. I haven’t been able to string any sort of momentum together and it is very hard on your confidence. You just have to stay mentally strong and keep grinding through it and I am just happy for the group that we got the right result today.
“When you can’t really pull your confidence from anywhere else you need your first one or two to go over because you are doubting your body and doubting different things. You’re not fluid, you’re not training all the time, but I guess there is probably an added bit of adrenaline with the last game of the year to just go for it and not worry about another game.”
In the end, Kirwan's first one or two did indeed go over and he was an enormous of Kildare's success on the day.
