After long planning battle, dozens of apartments to be built on site of historic Kildare building

Planning permission granted following a 'thorough review on appeal'

€4.7m residential development to go ahead in Kildare

The three-storey Malt House dates from 1850 and was refurbished in the 1980s.

Planning permission has been granted for a €4.7m residential development in Monasterevin, Kildare.

An Bord Pleanála has upheld a decision to approve planning permission for the development.

Consisting of 39 apartment units in total, the development is to be constructed at The Malthouse, Canal Harbour, Monasterevin, Co Kildare.

The three-storey Malt House dates from 1850 and was refurbished in the 1980s.

The former store manager’s house was built around 1885.

Previous planning applications for this site dating back nearly a decade have been unsuccessful.

The development consists of the demolition of a blockwork section of boundary wall at the entrance to the site and demolition of the existing bungalow (89.3sqm).

Also included is the redevelopment of the following existing buildings to provide 21 apartments: The Malt House, consisting of 17 apartments (six one-beds, 11 two-beds); the Manager's House consisting of two apartments (both two-bed units); and the existing Stable Block, consisting of two apartments (both 1 bed units).

There will also be the construction of 16 two-storey, residential dwellings comprising of: one two-bed dwelling; eight three-bed dwellings; and seven four-bed dwellings.

Two new single-storey apartments (both two-bed units) are also to be built, with 39 units proposed in total.

The works include all associated internal access roads, footpaths, car parking spaces, cycle parking, bin storage, site works, landscaping, boundary treatments, drainage and alterations to both the existing vehicular entrance and the entrance to station house (protected structure, rps no. b21-07). The promoter is Clonmel Enterprises Limited, with the architects for the project being Demesne Architects Limited.
