A bus services assessment is set to include one highly-populated town located in County Kildare.

That's according to TD for Kildare South Mark Wall, who made the announcement today (October 31).

The Labour Party politician said that, following representations he made to the National Transport Authority (NTA), the organisation responded that passenger demand and supply in Newbridge, along with other towns, is being assessed.

He also said that new or enhanced bus services could potentially be implemented from 2027 / 2028 onwards.

Elaborating on the development, Deputy Wall said: "As one of the most populated towns in County Kildare, there is an ongoing need to increase the public transport options available.

"We are seeing so many people come to Newbridge to call it home, and this will only place greater emphasis on the need to expand the current public transport options available to people living and working in Newbridge."

He continued: "In the NTA’s reply to me, they have informed that they are currently planning for the next phase of the potential new town bus services.

"They are assessing passenger demand and the current supply of bus services in a number of towns, which they have said includes the town of Newbridge."

Deputy Wall concluded: "The NTA intends to provide new or enhanced bus services in additional towns, with implementation beginning in 2027 / 2028 onwards; this will be dependent on gaps in existing services and of course subject to operational readiness and the availability of funding to provide for such services."

Earlier this month, Deputy Wall also called for the provision of an hourly train service for Athy.

At the time, he claimed that his petition for the service had the backing of 3,867 people and showed "a clear groundswell of support for expanding train services for the town".
