Kildare Minister welcomes major 2026 Climate Action Summer Works investment for local schools

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, has welcomed a significant allocation of funding to schools across County Kildare under the 2026 Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, announcing that five local schools have secured approval for vital upgrade works.

The national package, confirmed today (November 18), represents a €90 million investment in school infrastructure for 2026 and will deliver energy-focused improvements, essential building upgrades and, importantly, a major expansion of science laboratory facilities in post-primary schools.

Speaking today, Minister Lawless said: “Schools across Kildare will directly benefit from this investment, which strengthens their capacity to offer modern, energy-efficient learning environments.

“I particularly welcome the emphasis on science education and climate action, both of which are essential to the future skills our young people will need.”

Kildare Schools Approved for 2026 Works

Five schools in Kildare have been confirmed for projects across a range of improvement categories:

• Sn Cloch Rinnce, Moyvalley

  Primary: Approved for climate-related works, including essential roof upgrades.

• An Linbh Iosa, Naas

  Primary: Approved for window replacement and associated climate-action works.

• Gael-Choláiste Chill Dara, Nás na Ríogh

  Post-Primary: Secured approval for roof works and sustainability upgrades.

• Leixlip Community School, Leixlip

  Post-Primary: Approved under the curricular requirement category to meet expanding educational needs.

• Scoil Mhuire Community School, Naas

  Post-Primary: Approved for significant science laboratory modernisation and climate-action works.

Minister Lawless added: “This is a strong vote of confidence in our local school communities. These upgrades will not only improve day-to-day school life but will also help schools reduce energy costs and support Ireland’s broader climate targets.”

National Overview

Across the country, 297 projects have been approved. A key feature of this year’s scheme is the €30 million commitment to upgrading science laboratories in 60 post-primary schools, supporting the ongoing redevelopment of STEM curricula and the growing demand for high-quality science facilities.

Schools will receive detailed instructions from the Department of Education regarding the next steps in procurement and project delivery. Most works are expected to proceed during Summer 2026.
