Safety review has been sought for parking spaces located within one County Kildare estate.

The suggestion was put forward to Kildare County Council (KCC) by Social Democrats councillor Nuala Killeen at the latest Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, November 21 last.

Cllr Killeen, who attended the meeting by virtual means, motioned for KCC to conduct a safety review of parking at Harpur Lane Estate in Leixlip, "where parking layout as per original planning permission has been amended."

She also told KCC: "Issues with EV charging, designated parking and visitor parking to the playground and crèche and emergency vehicles access are causing issues daily."

Her motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Paul Brooks, who also attended the meeting by virtual means.

Speaking further on her motion, she told KCC that she had made "numerous visits" to the estate and has concerns over certain "pinchpoints" in the area.

Responding to Cllr Killeen's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "Harpur Lane has not yet been taken in charge by KCC.

"Construction is ongoing on Phase 2 of the development (Leixlip South); until such time as the development is taken in charge, responsibility for the issues outlined remain with the developer (or management company where applicable)."

KCC also said: "Development Control will engage with the developer in relation to the concerns outlined and to review both phases to ensure that they are constructed to a taking in charge standard and as per the granted planning permission."

In addition, KCC assured Cllr Killeen that an independent Stage 3 Road Safety Audit would be carried out upon the completion of the construction.

Furthermore, a representative of KCC who was present at the meeting also said that the council "is engaging with colleagues in the Planning Department" in relation to the issue.

Cllr Brooks replied by telling the representative: "I welcome the fact that KCC is aware of the developer control factor here."
