An Garda Síochána is today conducting a National Day of Action targeting the use of mobile phones while driving.
As part of this operation, Gardaí attached to the Carlow–Kildare Garda Division will be carrying out high-visibility checkpoints and patrols throughout the day, focusing on drivers using mobile phones while in control of a vehicle.
A Garda spokesperson said of the campaign: “Mobile phone use while driving is a major contributor to serious and fatal road traffic collisions. We are urging all road users to put their phones away, remain focused on driving, and help keep our roads safe for everyone.
“Drivers detected using a mobile phone while driving face three penalty points and a fixed charge of €120. Enforcement will be robust throughout the day.
“We remind all motorists that no call or message is worth a life.
“'Your mobile phone — would it kill you to put it away?'”
