LATEST: Former Kildare pub listed as Derelict Site by Kildare County Council

A sweet shop and a pub are among the buildings on Kildare’s derelict sites register, according to the latest figures from Kildare County Council.

Mary Hickey’s Sweet Shop on Church Street in Kilcock and Barney’s Pub on Duke Street in Athy are both listed as derelict, alongside dozens of other residential, commercial and historic properties across the county.

The Derelict Sites Register, last updated on December 3, 2025, includes more than 60 properties in towns such as Naas, Newbridge, Athy, Leixlip, Celbridge, Monasterevin, Sallins and Kildare Town.

Mary Hickey’s Sweet Shop has been on the register since June 22, 2011.

Barney’s Pub in Athy was added more recently, in September 2025.

Other notable derelict buildings include the Market House in Naas, the Old Band Hall on Cutlery Road in Newbridge, the former Garda Station on Leinster Street in Rathangan, and the former Grand Canal Hotel in Robertstown.

Several commercial premises in Kildare town are also listed, including a Bargain Store, a tattoo parlour on Station Road and a laundrette on Shraud Road.

A number of residential properties feature on the register too, such as houses in Lakelands and Monread Heights in Naas, Railway Terrace in Sallins and Curragh Plains in Kildare Town.

Athy has one of the highest concentrations of derelict sites, with multiple properties listed on Duke Street, Leinster Street, Stanhope Street and Woodstock Street.

Under the Derelict Sites Act, local authorities can place properties on the register if they are considered neglected, unsafe, or harmful to the amenity of an area.

Owners may face levies and enforcement action if sites are not brought back into use.
