A vehicle was stopped by Naas Roads Policing Unit in Kildare this week and gardaí quickly discovered the owner had given it to a friend to drive.

The driver was not insured to drive the vehicle and had never been named on the policy.

The vehicle was seized at the roadside.

A garda spokesperson said of the incident: “Allowing another person to drive your vehicle without insurance is a serious offence.

Consequences of driving or permitting driving without insurance include:

Immediate seizure of the vehicle

Court appearance

Fines and penalty points

Possible disqualification from driving

Increased insurance costs or difficulty obtaining insurance in the future

Before handing over your keys, always confirm that the driver is fully insured to drive that specific vehicle. No insurance. No excuses. No vehicle.”
